Pew Research Center’s latest survey of American youths found that TikTok has become the most popular social media network among those surveyed, and has skyrocketed in popularity since its North American launch many years ago. Sixty-seven percent of kids report using TikTok at least once, with sixteen percent claiming they are almost always on the app. When asked about their use of Facebook, the most popular social media platform among teens according to the Center’s 2014-15 poll, only 32% of kids reported doing so in 2018.

Latest Survey…

Pew research of 13-17 year olds social preferences.

The new survey from the Pew Center finds that 95% of kids use YouTube, making it the most popular site among those surveyed. Following Instagram and Snapchat, which are each used by almost two-thirds of surveyed teenagers, comes TikTok, which was used by 67% of respondents.

Next comes Facebook with 32%, then Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit, and Tumblr with lower amounts. The preferences of teenagers in regards to social media vary significantly by group. For instance, among teenagers, guys are more likely than girls to report using YouTube, Twitch, and Reddit, while among teenagers, girls are more likely than boys to report using TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and WhatsApp use is also higher among Black and Hispanic youth than among White teens.

Teens’ use of the five most popular social media sites (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook) is reviewed.

Over a third of young people say they use at least one of them “very constantly.” Teens who use TikTok and Snapchat are among the most active users on these services, with YouTube users not far behind.

Two-fifths of teen YouTube users and a quarter of teen Snapchat and TikTok users report using the apps quite frequently. Of all teenagers surveyed, 19% said they were YouTube regulars, 16% said they were TikTok regulars, and 15% said they were Snapchat regulars.
